We have been discussing different shapes and how we can recognize them. The first set of pictures are showing the children cutting out the different shapes and then arranging them to make a face. The next set of pictures show the finished article and you can see them up on the back wall of Room 7.

As you can see from the photos , the vegetables are growing at a fantastic rate and the children are really enjoying making their salad sandwiches with the lettuce.

Discovery time

Every Friday morning Room 7 and Room 8 children join together for discovery time. We have a variety of activities and the children move around and experience each activity. It is a lot of fun and the children experience talking about what they are doing and what they have just learnt. Sometimes they go and pick the fresh vegetables from our class garden and make themselves a salad sandwich.

Next Wednesday 24th August we will be having a refresher THRASS session to go over the basics in Room 7 at 3.00pm. All interested parents are welcome to attend.

Gardening

On Tuesday Room 7 had a lovely time planting out our new garden. We all had a plant to put into the ground and most of us planted a cauliflower. The plants that are in the garden are lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage,and broccoli. We hope some parents will send some more plants to school because we still have some spare space.

Junior disco

Last Friday we had our junior disco in room 8 at lunchtime. Mrs. Meys shifted all the furniture out of the room so that we had lots of space to dancewith our friends. She hung little fairy lights up and decorated the room with streamers and balloons. We all dresed up in our costumes and had a wonderful time.

The PPP programme

This year we have started a programme designed to help our pre-schoolers slot easily into the school environment. On the last visit they went up to the Green Room and they featured in a video using the green screen. They could decide on the background and how they were going to move. The next vision will be a surprise for the children because they are sitting together with a mystery background.

Music

We went up to the Library for our Music session with Dagmar. We became composers because we made up a music story using different instruments. We composed a story about the monarch butterfly and it's journey from a tiny egg. We used drums. shakers, triangles. a cabassa and a glokenspiel to make our musical sounds. We sat in little groups and decided which instrument would make the best sounds for the story. Then we became a band and performed our story for the rest of the class.

Our Pets.

We made a class quilt and we al added our pictures about our favourite things.

We made up some clues about our pets and everyone had to guess what our pet was. After that we drew our pets trying to show all our clues.

Welcome to 2011 to all parents and children. We have had a great start to the year. All children are enthusiastic about their learning and I am looking forward to sharing in their learning journey. We have been talking about our family, our favourite foods, pets, and activities. We have made a quilt square to show these in pictures. The following photos show us working hard on our quilt square. We will put this together to have a class quilt. You are most welcome to come and view our art work. We have also painted beautiful pictures of ourselves being happy at school.

Museum Trip

We went for a trip to Katikati Museum yesterday yesterday and saw lots of very interesting olden day things. We all dressed up in olden day clothes and we looked very cute. Mrs. Meys was pretending to be naughty and she got the strap.

Dear Parents , we have many new children in our class at the moment and we are all wonderful workers. We are learning to read and write and you can see us all writing stories about the cross country race.

Today we had a disco in Room 8 and we all dressed up in a fancy costume. We all looked cool as we danced to some neat music.

Term 2 2010

We have been working very hard this term and we are all enjoying learning about so many different things. We welcomed some new children at the beginning of this term and there are some more to come. In the first week we talked about ANZAC Day and we made a poppy to remember the soldiers who had gone to war to save our country.

Now we are discussing diversity and we are looking at different aspects of our lives. We will then make a comparison with another country.

We had lots of fun making our fish canvas. We sponged the paint on to the paper to make the fish and when it was dry we added pastel to make the scales. We painted the seaweed by using a stencil.

Welcome to the new year. The children have made a great start to the year and are working really well. All of them have settled to tasks set straight away. We went swimming today and it was so good to see the confidence they have in the water. We are spending lots of time establishing routines. A reminder about hats especially with this great weather we are having. We are looking forward to seeing you at the meet the teacher evening. If you have spare time and would like to be a parent helper please let us know when you are available. Thank you. It is going to be a fantastic year of learning.

Newsletter Term One 2010

Term One Newsletter 2010.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope your child is as excited about starting/coming back to school as we are and are all refreshed after the holidays.
This year Room 7 & 8 children will be working together for part of the day, while our numbers are small. This means there will be 2 teachers on hand to help our children.

Developmental /Discovery time. Every Friday morning we run a discovery time where children have the opportunity to try some new activities. If you have an interest or skill e.g. art/craft, cooking, science, gardening that you think would be suitable for 5 year olds and would like to be involved in this programme from 9.00 to 9.45 please see Jos or Lynne.

Perceptual Motor Programme (P.M.P). We would like to begin our P.M.P as soon as possible. This programme helps children with their co-ordination and small motor skills which will transfer through to help with work in the classroom. This programme depends on parent help working with the teachers for maximum benefit for your child. If you are able to help, please get in touch with Lynne/Jos. We will show you how you can help with the group you will be working with. The programme will be on Friday mornings from 9.00 till 10.30 p.m. It involves all Junior classes. Rm 5/6- 9.00 to 9.45 and R7/8 until playtime.

Meet the teacher
This opportunity to meet your child’s teacher is on Wednesday 17 February at 6.00 p.m. This is an ideal time to find out about class routines, homework, our Thrass programme, discovery time and P.M.P etc. It is also an ideal time to ask any questions about what happens in the class. We are looking forward to seeing you on the night.

Our theme this year is Celebrations. This term we are going to be looking at Talents. This will involve looking at your child’s talents and also those of their families. We will discuss how we can get better at the things we do to become more talented and of course celebrate what we are good at. If you have a particular talent that you would like to share please let us know as I am sure it will be good motivation for the children.

Swimming will be on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, in the afternoon. Please send togs and towel named in an appropriate swimming bag. Rash shirts are good protection from the sun. Mrs Meys will be in the water with the children. If your child cannot swim for a particular reason please send a note or tell the teacher.
